Federally-funded building measures have been successfully completed
In total, 12.7 million euros has been poured into the Leibniz Universität Hannover’s building measures from the so-called economic stimulus package which the Bund 2009 had put together. The library has been able to put about one-third of this into much-needed refurbishment and repairs. Amongst others, a new glass roof was fitted in the hall of the main building which now allows plenty of natural light to flood in. A brighter, friendlier atmosphere for users and staff is the pleasant result of this which is also supported by the successive renovation of the entire area and refitting of the student work spaces. Much of the work which has been carried out is not easily visible, such as that for fire protection improvements like fire alarm systems, fire safety doors and a smoke removal system.
The minister’s visit gave the library’s director, Uwe Rosemann, and university president, Professor Erich Barke, the opportunity to thank the state for its support and to confirm that the money has been well-spent. At the same time, they did point out that further refurbishment work needed to be carried out. The TIB/UB will therefore tackle the reading rooms next in order to create, as has been done in the hall, differentiated student work space options, whilst also re-equipping and rearranging the presentation of the collections. This represents another important development stage in the plans for the LUH’s learning space concept.
