Collections

The Hanover university archive takes care of the records of the LUH, its predecessor institutions and the merged institutes. Among others, the collections are comprised of subject and personnel files (central administration as well as departments or faculties, institutes), register lists and enrolment files, examination files, bequests, university calendars, various collection stocks, particularly image material but also from third party origins.

Older materials passed on from the Höhere Gewerbeschule (i.e. Higher vocational college), Polytechnische Schule (i.e. Polytechnic institute) and the Hanover technical university from the years 1831 to 1959 exist virtually complete as permanent loan at the Landesarchiv Niedersachsen (i.e. State archive Lower Saxony) - Hauptstaatsarchiv Hannover HstAH (i.e. Main public record office Hanover).

Until now the collections of the Hanover university archive have been indexed to only a very limited extent. There are inventory lists available for some collections and in the university archive itself it is possible to research in our database. The majority of documents are still being stored in the form of incoming material; for this there are search aids of varying quality and usability.

• Faculties, specialist areas, departments [among others records pertaining to a subject in the department of law, graduation records in the department of horticulture, graduation records in the department of landscape architecture and environmental development, graduation records in the department of chemistry, graduation records in the department of earth sciences]
• Institutes, seminars [among others the institute for landscape planning and nature conservation, history seminar]
• Integrated institutes [among others the Hochschule für Gartenbau und Landeskultur (i.e. University of horticulture and rural management) (1945-1959), records pertaining to subjects and  register records of the Pädagogische Hochschule Niedersachsen (i.e. University of education Lower Saxony) - Hanover department including previous records (1956-1980)]

Important collections in State archive Lower Saxony – Main public records office Hanover (HStAH)]

The collection Hann. 146A of the Hanover technical university is comprised of account books, [1831-1869] (Acc. 54/51), older personnel files [resigned by 1960] (Acc. 109/79, Acc. 88/81, Acc. 4/85), records from central administration [until 1945] (Acc. 31/73, 62/81, Acc. 63/81, Acc. 64/81, Acc. 65/81, Acc. 88/81, Acc. 10/85), register and student entry books [1831-1946] (Acc. 7/67, Acc. 134/81), enrolment files [1925-1946] (Acc. 134/81) as well as records of the Institut für Werkzeugmaschinen (i.e. Institute for Machine Tools) [1935-1945] (Acc. 125/85). The collection Nds. 423 Hanover technical university comprises the records of central administration from the years 1945 to 1959 (Acc. 11/85).

In addition to the permanent loan, further documents relevant to the history of the LUH can be found in other forms at the HStAH. Of particular interest is the collection of the Pädagogische Hochschule Niedersachsen - PHN [1946-1978] (Nds. 424), whose Hanover department was integrated into the LUH in 1978.
Further parallel past materials or supplements are offered among others in the form of collections of “Landdrostei Hannover” [1562-1906] (Hann. 80 Hannover), the leading governor of the province Hanover [1824/30-1955] (Hann. 122a), the Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur (i.e. Lower Saxon Ministry for Science and Culture) [1912-2003] (Nds. 401), the Lower Saxon ministry of finance [1910-1999] (Nds. 200), the student body and the Nationalsozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund an der Technischen Hochschule Hannover (i.e. National Socialist  German student league at the Hanover technical university) [1880-1939] (Hann. 320, IV), the picture collection and permanent loans (here especially bequests).
 
It is possible to research the collections of the state archive Lower Saxony in the
database AIDA. The collections Hann. 146A and Nds. 423 are only analysed to a certain extent in AIDA.
